Yogic exercises for root chakra
Here's a grounding exercise I use. This comes from yoga (the real yoga).
Using mind, muscles, subtle energy (prana) and breath grab that root chakra and pull up or hold it there.
In men it's located in the perineum muscle between genitals and sphincter.
In females it's slightly higher up (look up kegel exercises).
When I am really grounded I feel so strong like I can lift a car over my head.
Most martial arts use powerful grounding where the exercises are done basically just standing but you're standing so strong in your body that a forklift couldn't move you.
Some people visualize roots extending from the soles of their feet down into the middle of the earth (useful if you like visualizing but not necessary).
The root chakra is a profoundly interesting center.
Yogis say when you are in contact with it you will feel heat in the area.
Many of us on the spiritual path don't even feel it - we just sort of float in our bodies.
When the root chakra is powerfully "grabbed" one's sense of smell is supposed to heighten (again I haven't experienced that yet myself).
The deeper you go into the root chakra you can actually end up in the crown (every chakra is a yoga to Truth).
There are other powers that can come as well - knowledge of the Earth plane...levitation...are some I've heard of.
But for the sincere seeker this practice is really to stay grounded in the body and have a good wellness relationship with it and not just float away in meditation and in life. Important when you're driving the car (which I learned the hard way).
The root chakra, like all the chakras is a dimension. The Sanskrit for that is loka. The root chakra loka is called Bhur Loka it's the physical dimension that we all know when we are in the human experience. Look around you, you are in Bhur Loka right now. We're multidimensional beings coexisting in many dimensions at once.
I hope this helps.

I wonder if the heightened sense of smell is the smelling things that aren't there. Like thinking of your gran and smelling her perfume. Suddenly smelling flowers while there aren't any. There's a name for it, clair-something, hihi.
Just to add... Standing solid as a rock has to do with being connected to the (lower) Dan Tien, not the root chakra.
