The Gnostics thought salvation starts from realising God is the root of I, the self
That we needed a saviour to teach us this
And that a divine union between the self and God is salvation unmediated by anything external
They believed additional things about the celestial hierarchy
I think they understood God to be Spirit, which is the point of connection to regular Christianity but went off in a different direction
They understood the first Gnostic to be God
