A sleeper really worth seeing. If one truly loves sci-fi.
Mission to Mars ..... (Brian DePalma) 2000
some of the best elements from Dune, Close Encounters, and The Right Stuff.

(And unfortunately some pretty sappy family scenes that are entirely too long,, reminiscent of Right Stuff (but once the story-mission actually begins, the ride is worth it)

A highly optimistic, thrilling, heart rending and intelligent space adventure.

No blasters, space battles, explosions or kids destined to save the universe.

Just a smart, moving, exploration into the unknown ,with enough humor to balance the pathos & tragic elements inevitable in any hazardous journey.

If one can overlook the less than brilliant dialogue, one will be charmed by a thoroughly wonderful-exciting-intelligent adventure-story.

Gattica and AI for some reason didn't impress me.... I watched 1/3 of AI and returned the rental.

Gattica I've seen yet it didn't really touch me for some reason though it's very well acted-executed. And has a great look.
Too cerebral? Can't say .... i love philosophical films but not these.

Maybe I should try AI again some time.... just to see if I missed anything)
(I knew it was Kubricks project, but wasn't aware Speilburg directed it.)

Is it Silent Running where that poor little robot gets abandoned ? Very sad, who'd have thought I could feel for an artificial intelligence.

Yeah
They did a great job of creating personality for the little droids.
I rewatched it last month.
Of course it was Bruce Dern's performance that created the empathic screen relationship.
