Yes, Jenny & Simon--

I have a book called The Mind of the Raven about a German guy who basically carried out his own research about raven.

One thing he said is that they have some ?300 phonemes that are universal, but that in each geographical area, the sounds mean something different.

In my neighborhood, glu-glug means someone is in my territory and I don't like it. The clicking means someone is down below (the tree) but there is no danger.

Then there are those croaking sounds that they softly make to each other. It's like they are trying to talk.

Even the ones around my house are very polite. I have a rock across the street where I put things they can have (leftovers, catfood the cats won't eat, etc.). They never drag out the trash, even when it is out and available.

Of course there are always new young ones coming along. You can tell they are young because they open their beaks like "Feed me".

Endless entertainment-- for me anyway. I just can't see them as "bad".

The crows and ravens are messengers from spirit there is nothing evil about them at all.crows have alwats followed me about since i was young.i would take the dog through the woods the crows would see me and follow me.when i buried my husband we came out of the chapel to the grave yard everybody was shocked to see every head stone was covered in crows, the undertakers were really shocked they said they have never seen anything like it.

Azuly-

I didn't do this earlier because I was sure you had already looked it up, but here are just a few of the interpretations of raven:

"The raven is symbolic of mind, thought and wisdom according to Norse legend, as their god Odin was accompanied by two ravens: Hugin who represented the power of thought and active search for information. The other raven, Mugin represented the mind, and its ability to intuit meaning rather than hunting for it. Odin would send these two ravens out each day to soar across the lands. At day's end, they would return to Odin and speak to him of all they had spied upon and learned on their journeys."

Because my guide appears to be Native American, I search the web for "Native American Interpretation dreams" and then the bird I see. It has been very useful to me.

"Other Native North American tribes saw the raven as the bringer of light. In fact, southwestern tribes (Hopi, Navajo, Zuni) felt the raven was flew out from the dark womb of the cosmos, and with it brought the light of the sun (dawning of understanding). Consequently, the raven is considered a venerated bird of creation, for without the raven, humans would forever live in darkness. I've written more about the symbolic meaning of raven from a Native American perspective here."

You can see how many proponents they have here! More than you were expecting. But I'm sure the sign you asked for was not negative.

I'd place more on the blackbird. When they adopt you they will always protect you. The crows around our property have been missing for the breeding season and they are starting to appear. Yet the blackbirds are always there.
What's that song 'Blackbird singing in the ??? sky'

In Celtic Mythology the Raven is strongly associated with the deity called The Morrigan.

As a shape shifter she is said to have taken on the form of a Black Bird .

From the Ulster cycle,

The Death of Cu Chulainn

Quote:
As Cuchulain watched, a wagon approached, drawn by a single bright red horse walking upon three legs. Alongside it walked a footman holding a forked hazel wand. In the wagon was a woman with hair like bright red flames, wearing a red cloak. Red is associated with death and the Underworld in Celtic myth, and this apparition of the Morrigan in red was an omen of Cuchulain's death. Suddenly everything disappeared except the woman, who became a great black bird, and flew away.

Even this not withstanding Corvids are very much a part of our collective psyche with so many associations.

the ravens at the tower of London, a whole host of Native American crow mythology, and international legends and myths.

And Who could forget a Magpie superstition or two.

What Do You Do When You See a Magpie?

Do you greet him
and wish him Good Day
to keep the evil spirits at bay
or do you look for another
to bring you joy
or 3 or 4 for a girl or a boy?
Do you try to keep positive in your life
by asking the magpie after the health of his wife?
Is 5 or 6 your silver or gold
or the heaven and hell from another rhyme told?
Is 7 a secret not to be revealed
or is it the devil, as his own self, concealed?
Does 8 bring you wishes
and kisses from 9
and does ten bring you love
or a blissful time?
Where one rhyme stops at 7
another one has twelve and eleven
with health and wealth the sign
and just like 7,
thirteen is a screen
for the devil to appear not as thine

Love and hugs

Jo
