Soulie's Splodges ......

I always wanted to have a go at oil painting ...... for years I marvelled at the TV show "The Joy Of Painting" ...... starring the very quiet and unassuming Bob Ross, painting his "happy clouds" ...... he always made it look great fun, and so easy to get started !!

Recently too, I have been looking on Youtube at all the different videos posted by Artists, and found them very inspiring ...... so, I thought why not !! ...... I'll finally have a go.

So a few weeks back I took the plunge and got a few art supplies, including a nice but relatively inexpensive desk easel.

A couple of weeks of practicing various bits and bobs ...... getting used to mixing oils ...... trying out different techniques with the various brushes and a pallet knife, and so today I painted my very first oil painting ...... Yay !!

I have to say I am chuffed to bits with the result !! ..... I found some very helpful instructional videos on Youtube by a guy called Wilson Bickford ...... and kind of followed his lead, ending up painting this view of some Birch Trees ....... hope you like it !!

Any comments are most welcome ...... I am a total novice at this, and would be glad of any tips from anyone .......

Soulie.

Nice work soulie. Is this your very 1st 'official' painting?

I do believe you're a natural! What are you going to paint next?

Thanks Silvergirl ..... so nice of you to say that !!

Yep ..... very first oil painting of any kind, apart from painting by numbers when I was a nipper !! lol

Just spent the last couple of weeks basically doodling on art boards ..... trying out skies, clouds, trees, bushes, scrub ground ...... etc ...... following the advice of Wilson Bickford and Bob Ross videos I found on Youtube ..... mostly getting used to handling the paints, how they mix, how to thin them, which brush and techniques to (attempt !!) to use and trying not to get paint everywhere !! Yikes !!

So today I took the plunge, and voila !! ....... my very first painting !!

Its painted on a 12" x 9" canvas board ...... a bit cheaper than streched canvas for now !! ...... maybe if I get a little better in future I might consider it worth the extra cost of canvas, but for now this is ok by me.

As for what to paint next ....... hmmm .......

Have to get my thinking cap on !! .......

More "Splodges" from Soulie to follow !! .......

Very nice! I like the simplicity of the background and how the trees pop out in contrast. Especially fond of the texture of the tree trunks - you can almost feel it with your hand.

Looking forward to more!

Thanks Anima !!

Wilson Bickford gets the credit for the Birch Tree bark/texture ...... one of his videos shows how to get the effect with pallet knife and fan brush ...... didn't think I would get it right, but it worked a treat !!

I used to love Art class many moons ago at school (many!!) ....... Makes me feel like a kid again painting for fun ...... hah !!

Aw !! ..... cheers Squatch !! ......

Glad you liked it !! ....... as for the "splodges" ...... I wasn't sure what other people would think of it, so I "hedged me bets" a little with the title ....... lol

Next one might be a right disaster !! ........ Yikes !!

I did have quite a few "splodges" on me though !! ....... oil paint seem to get blinkin' everywhere if you aren't carefull !!

That's a pretty darn sweet painting! I'm going to have to take lessons from Mr Bickford!
