It is the nature of the mind to think. If we get caught up in our thinking then we give energy to our thoughts and we can spend the entire meditation lost in the "storm of thoughts".
It is possible to stop thoughts as they arise. If we do not give energy to our thoughts then the mind becomes quiet. This requires a continual state of vigilance and awareness, which is a challenge for most of us.
Using a mantra is very helpful. If we spend all day lost in random thoughts then when we sit down to meditate the mind is very active. Repeating a mantra (and this can be any mantra which suits us) through the day helps to keep the mind focused. This means that when we sit down to meditate the mind is much quieter and meditation is easier.
Becoming aware of the fact that our mind is out of control is the first step to regaining control of the mind. The simple fact that we are aware of our thoughts shows us that what we are is separate from the mind and all its thoughts. This awareness of separation from our thoughts leads to detachment from the thought process.
At the same time we also discover how attached we are to thinking, reliving memories, planning ahead, daydreaming, everything that goes on in the mind. This is all part of the journey.
Peace.

When it come to awareness that waves of thoughts struck, don't supress them, let them pass so that next thoughtlessness arise. Let them pass, pay your entire attention, concentration & focus on your meditation technique.
