This pretty much sums up my thoughts, also. I eat a "flexitarian" diet -- mostly vegetarian, with seafood or meat a few times a week. The meat I do consume I purchase from a local farm where the animals are completely grassfed, free to roam pesticide-free pasture, never given hormones or antibiotics, and are treated with respect. Whenever I prepare any food, I give thanks to the earth, ocean, sun, plants, or animal for providing me with sustenance.

I watched some pea plants the other day. I gently touched their tendrils with a thin stick, and watched as they responded, and curled. The tendrils seek out places to curl around, to get a grip, so that the plant can cling on and grow upwards. Living....responsive....with some sort of "nervous system" or whatever it's called.
Also plants respond to music, and to positive emotions. It's well known that plants which are sent loving vibrations thrive better than those that aren't.
Maybe it's humans who get hung up on 'labels' ("Souls"..... "Anthropomorphism"....all sorts of definitions, and we seem so scared of that whole "does a living Being have a Soul" thing...) Why do we have to be so picky about it?

All things live. All things sense, or feel, or wish to survive, respond, even Mountains have some sort of Presence, character .....Soul?? Goodness knows. Does it matter what it's called, or labelled? All things live, and we can communicate with them because we are all connected. All living Beings, even rocks, rivers, mountains -are all made of the same material. Stars.

Animals become individualised through positive association with humans and they retain this individualisation after death. Hence animals showing up in NDEs. (The one reported by Bryce Bond is a lovely one)

In the dream vision I received from my mother after she passed over both her childhood horse and our family dog were there with her.

I don't know about ALL creatures, from personal experience, but I certainly DO know that dogs are individual Souls. Simply from the afterlife experience I have had with one of them.

I would take that further. Look into the eyes of an owl and you will feel yourself being judged. Approach a gang of magpies and be thoroughly ignored - a very salutary experience !
