I don't know about a higher self, it's not something I think about. I am in charge of myself and nobody commands me, I am my own person.

In Buddhism there is no self ( Anatta ), I know very little about Hinduism so I can't comment.

I think in general the idea is that we are the 'ego self' and this gives way to the Higher Self, or Buddha nature if you're Buddhist. Didn't Buddha specifically say that he wouldn't enter into the debate about whether there is a higher Self or not? That it wasn't a relevant question?
