collective Karma.

We can't use "Karma" as a
scapegoat, an excuse, or life
script that is rooted in the ego.

responsibility, I'm going to
do a,b,c because of Karma -
when in reality you do it out
of other hidden reasons: jealousy,
hatred, etc).

You have to have purity of
heart, mind, and soul.

I know someone who is always advising me to do this or that "to clear the karma". I know for a fact that if you don't really mean it and are for example apologising just to clear karma, it won't work.

I'm not sure how karma works but this year I have also seen quite a few elderly people who hurt others when they were young and strong really suffer in their old age.

If we truly understand our own intents/motivations, then we might start to understand kamma.

When we see someone do something bad/negative in life you would think that the negative Karma that has been accrued would be paid back instantly. It would make sense that the person would get punished immediately for this action and learn from it but the majority of the time this does not happen.
Karma is mechanical. If we owe the Karmic debt then we will pay it back either in this life or in the next life/lives. This all comes under the Universal law of 'Cause and effect'.
The key to negative Karma is Intent. If we really think about doing something bad/negative then we will accrue negative Karma.
Our whole life on this planet is Karmic, good and bad.
Remember we can also build positive Karma in our lives by having good thoughts, saying the right words and carrying out good deeds.
We are all responsible for our own Karma.

I am a believer that karma debt from one past life to a current life is not a real thing. This is just my opinion, but in no way this would be fair. Sure, who said it needs to be fair. Still..

I think that if one's karma is way too negative, he/she does not reincarnate. eg hitler, genghis khan...

The original Eastern doctrines mostly of the Sivaist direction say that karma represents evolution. And people with good karma who obtain supernatural powers through meditation can come between higher = supernatural beings.
See for example Ocean of stories by Somadeva. Somadeva was a Shivaistic priest and his book shows old teachings.

I've always said that I must have really ticked someone off in a prior life when I go thru bad karma - because it seems when my bad karma hits, it sometimes hits below the belt so to speak.

I try to do good most of the time. but being human, no one is perfect and I have done not so good things too. I think the more good I do though, it helps to balance out the bad things, and even out my karma. People who deliberately do harm to others though, bad karma will come round and I think that it will follow you into future lives, until you learn what you need to to break the cycle
