Well, if you know your history about the place, you'd know that this "palace" is actually a mausoleum.

Just recently, I read a report where the beautiful marble of the Taj Mahal is being threatened by the droppings of insects that are swarming from the highly polluted river nearby. Workers scrub the marble daily to clean the droppings off, but the act of scrubbing is starting to wear away the mosaics. Unfortunately, the problem is actually turning the white marble green and there isn't an easy solution.

One of the most fascinating things that I've learned about the Taj Mahal is that the architecture follows the Golden Ratio. If you have a chance, I'd suggest you do some research into the Fibonacci sequence and what is meant by sacred geometry. It's an incredibly interesting story.

Taj Mahal is 3 hours drive from my home.I went to Taj Mahal 6-7 years ago.
For me it is just a marble structure.I don't understand why people go there,But everyone has their taste.
It is told that Mugal emperor made it in memory of her Queen Mumtaz.
One theory is that It was originally a Shiva temple made by Hindu rulers of Tomar Rajput dynesty. It was convert into a mausoleum.Infact it was made 200 years before the birth of shahjahan.Just a theory by Prof. P N Oak.
Whatever a large number of people visit it from around the world due to reason that it is a symbol of love.
1 hr drive from there is Mathura and Vrindavan. You can visit there.

Regards,
Wandering Yogi
