I keep "hearing" kitchen. Was it used to keep food cool and away from critters?

I stared at the pic for a while. I'll have to think on this. It has something to do with a room, but I'm not getting it. Unless it is a wedding chest or wardrobe used by someone in the castle. It looks to be made of wood.
