I've been given a crystal a few times, but usually I don't know what to do with 'em.
One is a Lemurian lifepath that he felt really resonated with me. I haven't a clue what to do with it. I've had it for some 10 years now, was gifted by someone on Ebay when I purchased another crystal of him.
It looks a bit like a Lemurian seed, and although I love crystals with Lemurian energy, the seeds don't resonate with me at all.
Another is a blue Andes opal. Lovely, but it's been upstairs for some 10 years.
I've also been gifted a beautiful high vibrational rose quartz by a date which was totally sweet. Some 10cm diameter, so not a small one, came from a good shop. That one I do like.
But somehow gifted crystals never come to feel mine? It's still the crystal given by that date, that seller, that friend.
I prefer to choose and buy my own!

Hi.
It's great you prefer to choose your own. Sounds like you know exactly what you want! That's a wonderful thing.
For me personally it means a great deal to receive one from another. Not many people in my life are even aware of my spiritual leanings and for me stones play a significant role along my path.
Those whom know me who are aware in the first place that I love to receive stones are people whom are very close to me. Those few I trust.
The person whom gave me the septarian is a man I have interest in and a very good friend of mine. It means a lot to receive a thoughtful gift from him.
Now I'm on the hunt for a gift to give in return.
I do appreciate as well being able to pick out stones that personally call to me. I simply do not get a chance to that often.
