I don't know how to be more precise...

Mostly it is symbolic. The more impacting the memory of it the more desperate the mind is that you work it out. Dreams are symbolizing and reflecting your life.

But if only it were so clean as that. As someone mentioned above entities of all varieties can enter in. Living people who know the art can also invade your dreams at will. Living people that don't know they are in your dream can also appear. Dreams can be prophetic in nature. They can be literal word for word.

95% of the time they are merely symbolic and represent unresolved issues.

It is easy to discount ones dreams and feel that they do not represent your waking life at all, but that is because they're often presented as a symbolic representation of things going on in your life and sometimes they're metaphorical. That's not to say that your dreams are always about the days events or things going on in your life as there is also a running narrative that takes place. This running narrative or thread is there for you to understand who you are.

We dream for four reasons. In no particular order:

- To process recent events
- Precognitive/prophetic
- Sheer entertainment
- Guidance and information

Human brains are never quiet. I tend to think our dreams generally reflect ourselves. If we are fearful (even subconsciously), our dreams will often also be fearful (regardless of the reason for the dream). If we are quiet and shy, our dreams will reflect that in some way. This isn't 100%, of course, because the opposite might occur in order to get us to wake up (figuratively).
