It has been totally ridiculous lately, but I've been on the way out of here for some time and like Norseman mentioned the 'old-timers' are posting less and less it seems. I doubt my departure would help any since I don't have much to say anymore. (never did before either, just blathered away like a fool)...

I guess I don't understand what the true issue is, did this place downgrade?

I think that with the crash the forum moved to another host and the team's choice was poor, or saw this as an opportunity to lower costs. Like norseman I think that the problem is an underpowered server and deleting posts and threads, inactive members, etc is only tinkering at the periphery.

You are right, at times it is ridiculous how one can get a server busy message for minutes on end. It makes the user experience quite unpleasant.

Publishing some usage stats and hosting package parameters would be great but I shall not hold my breath.

I understand that this is frustrating, but when the site was suspended for using too many resources on the shared server, the only option to get it back up and prevent it from being suspended again was to place some limits to prevent this site from using too many resources, as was mentioned earlier. We were going over these limits too much before, but were not aware of it. The web host suspended the whole site when they became aware of this.

Since setting those limits, when the server becomes too busy we see those messages. This prevents the site from getting suspended altogether again.

We are still on the same server. Since it is a shared server, it is possible that sometimes the server becomes too busy because of activity on other sites sharing the server. That can have an affect our site even when we don't have as many members on. Such is the nature of shared servers.

We have been researching options. SF means a lot to me and the staff, and we will do what we can to help, but it will take time to find a more long term solution. The ideas that have been offered by members here are appreciated, and I am moved by your generosity.

In view of the situation, I would advise everyone to write posts in your Wordprocessor for pasting into SF. That way, you dont lose the work if the server is "too busy"

Another option (easy) is to highlight and copy the post before submitting it.

That way, if it comes up "the server is too busy..." it can then be pasted once screaming has stopped and the server decides that your post is now worthy of being sent!

I'm glad to see that SF is trying to figure out how to work around this issue. I stopped by a month ago to see "server busy" over and over and only came back since to see "server busy" message once again. Good luck guys.

Webhosting really isnt that expensive. You can get unlimited data transfer and diskspace for less than 15 dollars a month in most places. To be honest I'm not sure why this is a problem.

Here is a top 5 webhosting list.

If it is shared web hosting, it is inexpensive. If they need to use a dedicated server, it is not.

Also unlimited data transfer doesn't mean it can handle heavy MySQL and PHP traffic well.
