Clearly the message in that book which is always taken to hand is

Do not kill

not do not kill except for xxx, xxx or xxx.

the consequences of not killing have to be fully acceptable otherwise there is no point in anything.

There are 2 kinds zombie.

1) the horror zombie (of the genre we know and love)
2) the philosophical zombie (p-zombie)

The latter was popularised by philosopher David Chalmers. He argues that the physical systems of the body do not give rise to conscious experience. He described the p-zombie as doing everything a human does but without any awareness. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BzIxoy4JnjI

As a big reader of scifi........traditionally there are two types of zombies. .

1.......supernatural zombies.......the undead

2 ......biological zombies. .........turned to zombies often due to biological warfare such as in John Ringo's Under a Graveyard Sky ( great series of books if you enjoy this kind of novels)

As far a if you should kill either sort to defend family and home?

All I can say is "lock and load" baby!

Some thoughts...

Interestingly, the zombie phenomenon is likely a mix-match of different diseases throughout history. Rabies in particular as it makes the host lose himself and the virus is spread by bites. A pandemic apocalypse is reminiscent of plague outbreaks. If people cannot be cured and are also a danger to others than euthanasia is ethical.

In the video game Elder Scrolls Online there's a people who's religious beliefs prevent them from killing zombies, as they could be the people's ancestors [and harming your ancestors is a no-no]. But they have a solution in that they created an organization who's sole purpose is to kill zombies in case of an outbreak, but those who are part of this organization are at the same time shunned by mainstream society and seen as a necessary evil. Bit like the executioner in a Medieval community.

What is the zombie making us ask ourselves?

They are a kind of monster, and have you noticed that the worst monsters are human, or used to be human, like vampires, werewolves, zombies and Jeckle and Hyde?

Death is there. Vampires are dead so they live forever. Zombies are dead and stay alive no matter what we do. They have special ways of being killed - they have to be killed in a particular way. There is ritual way to kill zombies by obliterating their brain, and vampires a stake in the heart, werewolves a silver bullet... you don't simply kill a monster... it has to be done in the 'right' way.

Monsters that used to be human tend to be scarier because they are relatable. There is a fear that we too can become the monster..

In the case of zombies it's not just about ourselves but civilization itself. They are doom in every possible way. Vampires are so different, and often presented as sort of classy and sophisticated, and retain self awareness so they are less scary overall. I bet a lot of people would go vampire if the option was available. And they still need people around so they do have a sense of keeping things sustainable, lol..

There was a song By Skillet that came out years ago called "Monster". It was about the monstrous side of the lead singer, temper and rage and so forth that he tries the keep in, but it was a deep song which revealed a deeper meaning in the video's story. It is the most meaningful music video, like, Eva!

In the show "The Walking dead", much effort is expended not only saving people from zombies, but also saving people from becoming zombies(by killing the bitten). Indeed, given a choice between death and zombiefication, most would prefer death, because becoming sub-human is a fate worse that anything else. Zombification thus represents hell. It is a particular kind of death where a good person is re-born as a monster. To save the human we kill them before they turn into a monster under a somewhat twisted vision of heaven, which is not paraside per-se, but one which is quite simply not hell. After all, anything else is better than hell.

Agreed almost everyone would prefer death...seriously, who wouldn't?
It's the worst kind of hell...the kind where you don't even know you're in hell...because your humanity has been destroyed and you've been turned into a mindless murderer.

Because of the propensity for truly mindless evil and harm, being put down would be a mercy -- and going to your end would be the last kindness you could (unwittingly) do for the rest of humanity.

Peace & blessings
