Possible yes. As with all stories and myths, it goes from one person to another and everyone adds different elements to the story. Every person picks out the parts he or she likes. Interpretations vary and each cultural group attempts to make these stories accessible to different people and to different times.
I remain sceptical and if these beings exist (and in every garden) we would have overwhelming proof. That's not to say they don't exist, but I consider it unlikely.
But just imagine the stories at a campfire 10000 years ago.. it was probably big fun!
