My take:
Within duality, our consciousness may either be associated to outcomes or not. Two orientations. Association signals attachment, attachment arising from fear and/or desire. Moreover association means our thoughts are either rooted in the dead past or fixed on the uncertain future.
The consciousness not attached to outcomes is free and present moment oriented. Alive.
With this preamble, already known to all, suffering then is attributable to association of consciousness with outcomes. The old adage ‘pain is inevitable, suffering us optional’ is self explanatory.
Suffering is the artificial magnification of pain. The pain in turn may be real but in most cases it arises from association to outcomes. Delusion from believing true the maya illusion.
