Female enlightened master Jan Frazier on being aware and unconscious...

Insightful article by female enlightened master Jan Frazier on being aware/conscious and unconscious....

https://janfrazierteachings.com/being-conscious/

Quote:
Being conscious occurs in the now. When you’re conscious, you’re aware of what’s happening in the now: sensation in your body, what your body is doing, things directly observable in the immediate scene. Consciousness is neutral, unresisting awareness of present-moment reality. There are no mental filters, no inner narrative. Simply awareness of what is, right now.

Being unconscious means you’re lost in thought, in the pictures and stories your mind is producing. You have entered the made-up content of your mind and are occupying it as if it were reality itself. Your ego is invested in this content as being real and important, and very likely as a result you are experiencing some kind of emotion (stirred up by the thinking). You have forgotten that all of it is the product of your mind (even if its content appears to be true or important). As a result, you are missing actual reality, what’s happening in the now — including that you are inventing the thoughts. - Jan Frazier

All thoughts have its source in past memories, and when thought with its corresponding emotions is allowed to dominate present moment experience, one is allowing the past to contaminate the present experience and make it stale.

In awareness or pure consciousness, one sees reality as it is without the intrusion of the dead past, and thus perceives each situation afresh, without our likes and dislikes due to past memories getting in the way, distorting the experience. This enables one to respond intelligently rather than react mechanically to the experience.

The mind incessantly swings to past and future through unconscious thinking and emoting, due to past memories or future anticipation, prompted by desires and fears, instead of being in the living present. All austerities in Hinduism is focused on bringing the mind to the living present, rather than living in psychological mind-made content which is obviously unhealthy.
