Happiness is the result of an enlightened mind whereas suffering is caused by a distorted mind.

Some people that are interested in Buddhism seem to gravitate toward the belief in Maietrya, some do not. Just as there are some, like my Mother-in-law, who are deeply involved with Kwan Yin.

I personally have never heard my Buddhist friend speak of Maitereya, it could be seen as similar to the second coming of Jesus
My Chinese Teacher is a big fan of Kwan Yin.

Maitreya is the Buddha of the future.
I know a Japanese Buddhist woman. I asked her a few days ago if she knew Maitreya. She claimed she never had. So I showed her 2 statues of the Japanese version of Maitreya. We departed and when I saw her the next day, she claimed she does believe in Maitreya.
