Zen Themes in Pop Music

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2lyZ...lyZQB1H_Zw#t=0

Where am I today? I wish that I knew
'Cause looking around there's no sign of you ("you" metaphor for true self)
I don't remember one jump or one leap
Just quiet steps away from your lead (had it, then somehow lost it)

I'm holding my heart out but clutching it too (conditional love of ego)
Feeling this short of a love that we once knew (remembering divine love)
I'm calling this home when it's not even close (feeling separated from true home - home metaphor for contentment grace)
Playing the role with nerves left exposed (questioning who i am -getting hurt by others)

Standing on a darkened stage, stumbling through the lines (questioning who I am)
Others have excuses, but I have my reasons why (identifying with thought as self

We get distracted by dreams of our own
But nobody's happy while feeling alone
And knowing how hard it hurts when we fall (ego leads to conflict and suffering)
We lean another ladder against the wrong wall (trying to escape ego and thought in the wrong ways)

And climb high to the highest rung, to shake fists at the sky (false paths)
While others have excuses, I have my reasons why transcends thought, sees it from above)

[Bridge:]
With so much deception it's hard not to wander away (understands self, wakes up)
It's hard not to wander away
It's hard not to wander away
(wander away, no self there anymore, no more identification with thought.)

It's amazing how songs can be interpreted as zen, spirituality, and philosophical thought. Also, it is like the song speaks to you.

There are many songs all over that shares a thought the likes and its wonderful to find out and compare.

For the song written from Reasons Why:
It seems in the beginning it seems like a person is coming from realization, but took baby steps upon spiritual growth, probably due to inexperience. Though, spiritual growth is about maintaining strides, big or small. Though, when in the opportunity it is important to make continual efforts in strides toward the higher being.

As the song progesses, it meets to bit of trouble through "stumbling through the lines" which could be due to mishaps, ignorance, or in the plain notion of not understanding. In life, it is good to read between the lines, in nature in all of its respect. Ignorance keeps the aspirant in bay.

"And climb high to the highest runge, to shake fists at the sky" this seems like the ego or our personality are set in our own ways in arrogance. Though, it could be more of ignornace and understandings a before with
"stumbling through the lines".

Personally, I would like to see the light in this song, but it seems to share awareness of a wandering soul. For what has been written, it could help those to keep from there wandering.

Your comments are great and share good help guiding throughout the piece!

^^

Donovan has an album called Sutras, I haven't listened to all the songs but the ones I did hear are very spiritual.

Here's one that can be seen to be a metaphor for the awakening process:
Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UYIAfiVGluk

Where are we? What the hell is going on?
Normal moorings are gone - one is trying to get bearings
The dust has only just begun to fall,
This is a new recently acquired state
Crop circles in the carpet, sinking, feeling.
Removed furniture (parts of ego) are gone leaving marks in carpet (self)
Spin me 'round again and rub my eyes.
Can't focus on old ideas and identity
This can't be happening.
When busy streets amass with people
Would stop to hold their heads heavy.
Amazed to find oneself finally free of ego
When everyone they see are still trapped and suffering

Hide and seek.
The cat and mouse game ego plays to hide the true self
Trains and sewing machines.
Wedding gown train (more parts of ego and identity from past/ old identity(marriage/sewing)
All those years they were here first.
One starts the journey already full of ego identity
Oily marks appear on walls
Pictures on wall (more parts of false self) have been removed
Where pleasure moments hung before.
The pictures represent egos attachment to pleasures
The takeover, the sweeping insensitivity of this still life.
Realization has replaced thought as emptiness
Hide and seek.
Trains and sewing machines. (Oh, you won't catch me around here)
No longer will be identified with old self created by thought and memory
Blood and tears (hearts),
Ego always had a component of suffering
They were here first.
Thats where the journey began from.
Mmm, what you say?
Thoughts appear...questioning them
Mm, that you only meant well? Well, of course you did.
Sarcasm...sees through thoughts lies
Mmm, what you say?
More thoughts....they are questioned...
Mm, that it's all for the best? Of course it is.
More sarcasm, seeing though the false realities presented by thought
Mmm, what you say?
More thoughts...questioned...
Mm, that it's just what we need? And you decided this.
you told me what reality is... and who are you!
What you say?
Mmm, what did She say?
Refers to old self as "She" in third person. No longer seen as the self.
Ransom notes keep falling out your mouth.
Ransoms are about you give me that for this...no longer fooled by this/delusion..
Mid-sweet talk, newspaper word cut-outs.
sweet talk = lies from ego/thought, words cut out of newspapers..no context or reality
Speak no feeling, no I don't believe you.
Thought no longer believed...
You don't care a bit. You don't care a bit.
See though the false realities promised by thought
(hide and seek)
Ransom notes keep falling out your mouth.
Thoughts/ego (that for this - ransom) - are not working anymore to hook one
Mid-sweet talk, newspaper word cut-outs.
Sweet talk=fake love...fake promises
(hide and seek)
Speak no feeling, no I don't believe you.
You don't care a bit. You don't care a bit.
(hide and seek)
You don't care a bit.
You don't care a bit.
You don't care a bit.
(hide and seek)
You don't care a bit.
You don't care a bit.

A very nice Zen song by System of a Down featuring Serj Tankian:

Aerials - System Of a Down

Life is a waterfall
we're one in the river
and one again after the fall
Before enlightenment 'chop wood carry water' after enlightenment 'chop wood carry water'.
swimming through the void
we hear the word
we lose ourselves
but we find it all....
Through meditation and hearing 'om', we lose the ego but attain nirvana.
cause we are the ones that want to play
always want to go
but you never want to stay
and we are the ones that want to choose
always want to play
but you never want to lose
We must even give up the desire to be desireless, or the attachment to losing attachments
aerials, in the sky
when you lose small mind
you free your life
To access the akasha and hear the spirits 'cosmic aerials' we must surrender the lower mind to the higher mind to attain liberation
life is a waterfall
we drink from the river
then we turn around and put up our walls
We become defensive, thinking the way we believe is the way that everybody should.
swimming through the void
we hear the word
we lose ourselves
but we find it all...
cause we are the ones that want to play
always want to go
but you never want to stay
and we are the ones that want to choose
always want to play
but you never want to lose
aerials, in the sky
when you lose small mind
you free your life
aerials, so up high
when you free your eyes eternal prize
aerials, in the sky
when you lose small mind
you free your life
aerials, so up high
when you free your eyes eternal prize
When you see beyond what is seen, you will gain nirvana or the 'eternal prize'

There we go, my contribution to this thread.
