Shepherd (sheep herder). Possibly also Coward is originally from cow herder.

This makes sense when you think back to hunter gather societies. Your male prowess was measured by the deadliness of the prey you hunted, that coincidently usually also meant a better return for the settlement.
Hunting a mammoth would have required strength, coordination and wits whereas a cow would seem like an easy target, only a cow herder would be proud of.
Later on our position in society was literally our name. So Smith was the guy who hammered swords and Thatcher was the woman who works on rooves. Only royalty had first names as only they were "important" enough to warrant them.
So, if your place in society was as a cow herder, your name was Coward. You were referred to as Coward. Your personality was assumed to be like that of other's in the family of Cowards. You can check the phonebook. Coward is not an uncommon surname.
You'd be a Coward but it also would be known that meant you herded cows. Over time the term became b@sterdised and we forgot its origin.
That's my theory, anyway
