I had to see what you meant...

I agree the designer definitely lacks subtlety, yet suspect the site owner created it himself, rather than paying a prof designer..... something many "one man operations"
non-profit , have to resort to.
Not everyone possesses great taste, or has the time-talent to create an attractive site....
and many sincere folks don't understand how aesthetic first impressions form public opinion.

How garish-(cheesy) colors may send the wrong message.

Henry77 for me I think it's because lately I came across lots of these so-called 'sales pages' of internet marketeers which have the same style of design, very narrow column, hots of yellow highlighting - in fact I took a course in direct mail marketing and that's what we were taught to do. It's actually one of the easiest ways to make a website, it's a simple html page with absolutely no 'cute css' or anything. I guess it's true what they say that we all see the world through our own filters and perceptions, because for me that was what the site came across as and what formed my first opinion - before I took a second look. And glad I am I did because that site (and the other sister two) have a wealth of information.

Somebody who is not much familiar with sales pages might not make this particular connection at all and might simply see it for what it is - a site made by one person in their own time who is most probably not a website developer.

yeah I totally get it, and also tend to pay more attention to well considered aesthetics-presentation.
There's a site I occas referred folks to, CSETI, that had a rather unimpressive simplistic design, relying on text, and it didn't suggest the wealth of information behind it.
Some folks commented on that fact (poor presentation) and lost out on a unique resource, though I totally understand. (First impressions really matter)
They've wisely (professionally) revamped the site.
