Perception of Death

'Death' is a doorway we go through. A shedding of a skin we no longer need, or which is no longer viable. The larger part of us is body-less, we slip through into that.

Having had a life-transforming near-death experience many years ago, I view death as essentially a transitional non-event.

I agree that there is no death ..... only eternal life (in an indescribable way ).

It would be easy for anyone to say i'm not afraid of death while clinging to the belief of an afterlife.

I personally don't want to die at this point of my life. Maybe if i were bored with my life, or things were really that bad, or if i were old, but this is not the case. Right now i am having fun. I enjoy living. There is still so much for me to learn and explore. I feel young, alive, full of energy and passion. Why welcome death when there is still so much to live for? When there is still so much potential for me to grow.

Oh, yes...I used to be in that same school...until I had a NDE. I used to think, "Where's the evidence? Why hasn't science discovered this if consciousness survives death?" I use to believe that NDErs were either hallucinating if not right out making it up...just to try to convince themselves of God or at the least an afterlife. Then it happened to me. For me it isn't something I "believe" happened to me. It's something I experienced, just as I remember the fun I had at the last gathering with close friends, but far more a reality than even that.
I used to fear death and felt great sadness for those who passed. Now I'm actually happy when someone passes (although I'd never verbalize that to close survivors), because I know and anticipate what awaits. If I were younger, I might not be so anxious, but I'm 67, have no children and the people I'm closest to are getting all the ills of older age (even though I feel great and despite a heart attack 9 years ago have no serious health issues).

But, if you reject NDEs, that's fine. In fact, no one should believe anything unless they have tangible proof. There is no tangible proof (scientifically) that NDEs are a reality. Yet, those of us who've had them (and at least some OBEs) know different...because we have the experience and pretty much find too many great similarities to be simply imagination, the result of administered drugs effects on the psyche (when many NDEs are without any drug involvement), or the ridiculous notion that this is somehow programed to happen at death when the reality (supposedly) is that death is final.

It doesn't matter what one believes or doesn't believe, or whether we fear death or embrace it...the important thing is that we have respect for each other and try to build a better world without fear, greed or dominance.

This is very hard to do because of attachments to people and possessions and subsequent fears. The whole fear of death comes from this. It is terrifying to many and hence they miss out on what possibly is a great experience.

I agree with what Interuniversalism said-- death is a door.

Since I believe our reality/perceivable universe is but a microcosm (or tiny arm of a fractal) within a far larger multiverse, a part of me looks forward to death. Even if the "me" I refer to will not exist after the ego-death aspect. I've had only a glimpse (a faint memory, rather), from what I recall, it feels like an incredibly fast, euphoric release. An instant, total re-connection to, or re-integration with everything-- while becoming everything, and nothing, all at once. I believe one can stay in that state-- the natural, non-compartmentalized state of being-- or reincarnate or what-have-you.

I also feel that something about Earth's reality causes a strange, intense kind of amnesia (which slips off after death) which I am NOT fond of. I do not think that perpetual reincarnation on Earth would be terribly productive.

I for one do not like the whole situation of living in a heavy flesh vessel on a planet with a heavy, dense, molten-lead like atmosphere. I don't want to die any time soon, but I certainly look forward to it in a sense. Yet, I still fear death-- not quite death, itself so much as the spaces in between where one could perhaps become lost within one's own personal hell-like realm.

Even if you are convinced of the reality of life after death (and before), then it can be a frightening prospect. These fears are based upon not so much the process itself but the worry about loss.

If your life is a happy one and you love your family, where you live, and all aspects of it, then the idea that you will eventually have to give it all up and move on is a worry for those in their senior years.

Even if your convictions are strong and you are confident that life will go on for you after your passing, it's the fact that you can't remember and are not aware of what awaits you - the fear of the unknown, and the fear of having to say goodbye to those you love.

I am reminded of a quote from Lord of the Rings where Gandolf is consoling Pippin on death...

“PIPPIN: I didn't think it would end this way.

GANDALF: End? No, the journey doesn't end here. Death is just another path, one that we all must take. The grey rain-curtain of this world rolls back, and all turns to silver glass, and then you see it.

PIPPIN: What? Gandalf? See what?

GANDALF: White shores, and beyond, a far green country under a swift sunrise.

PIPPIN: Well, that isn't so bad.

GANDALF: No. No, it isn't.”

However an individual person chooses to interpret/fantasize about what happens after we die, I see it as just another path...It gives one peace of mind believing this life is not all there is, that we are eternal beings and there is nothing to be afraid of in death...I am also a believer in once we die we experience an instant reunion with our loved ones, so there is no waiting for the ones who pass on...releasing fears of the unknown by realizing this doesn't make death look so bad, as dear Pippin expresses ;)
