Pretty mainstream and older selections, i've heard a lot of house music, but don't know what a lot of it is or was.

I think that is pretty much the case with most people who enjoy house music. The artists have obscure names like "16 bit lolitas" and the songs equally so.....

Only the geeks know who produced which song.

I just did this a couple of weeks ago.....it seems kinda wrong not to put the link up here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFsKl...3MPHKmSGVWaxkP

It was a lot of fun, shaky in parts but pretty good in others. I was an aspiring DJ through most of the 1990s but let it go towards the end of the decade. I know this is a spiritual forum and we should all be nice to each other but please dont feel obliged to listen to it, once I got started I found it hard to stop, so its pretty long.

House music all night long :)

I wish i was the geek who knew all the songs lol, im a geek anyways, so that's a start haha. Yeah, it's hard to know when you here a song you like played by a DJ somewhere, unless you are a committed investigator of such things. I have had mild success at tracking some of it down.

Andrew - will check out your set or whatever the link is there, prepare to be judged haha ;)

House is a weakness in my music knowledge database repetoire. You got your hard house, your tribal house, your deep house, your minimal electro blah blah blah i get so confused all i know is house usually goes *ooon-ch ooon-ch, oon-ch oon-ch..* quite a bit heheh.

I find it interesting that there was this sort of division between house music lovers and breaks aficionados, i guess not that strange since everyone has there preferences, but i would hear 'I hate house' or 'house sucks' sometimes, and things like 'break and drum n bass is evil' also. Always wondered about that, the staunch 'house or breaks only' crowds. And don't even mention trance that would really do it. The one thing both house and breaks listeners could agree on probably, no trance, trance sucks.

Haha yes, Ive never been very keen on trance. I went from break beat rave music in the early 90s to early drum and bass and then into house and US garage but was also partial to a full on techno (Jeff Mills and Dave Clarke) kind of a night every now and again. Ive had heaps of fun lately catching up on music of the last 10 years, but I dont really like the modern electro house sound. I find it a little grating on my elderly ears hehe.

Do either of you buy the Balance CD's? It is a series of DJ compilations on the Balance label. Very good stuff. I heartily recommend it.

How about Global Underground? A similar label which releases DJ compilations.

People like Oakenfold, Tenaglia, Digweed, Sasha etc.

Yes! I remember that brand from when I was still involved with the music. Really cool. There was a fantastic brand that I used to buy called 'Journeys by DJs'. I dont think they are around now though. What I have found really cool is how many international producers there are now. When I was buying records it was mainly just UK, USA and a bit of Italian. These days it seems the house music comes from all over the world.
