Meditation Teaching Certificate

Has anyone on this site done an online meditation certificate program? Meditation has truly changed my life and I would like to learn as much as I can about it so I can become a teacher. I have researched a handful of organizations ranging from 300 dollars to over 1500. the one that has stuck out is the mindfulness center.org. I understand you do not need a certificate to teach but I feel as though it would make it more official. If anyone has gone down this road I would love some insight. Thank you so much.

I appreciate your desire to teach others because meditation has done so much to help you, but I question the value of any kind of certification.

Firstly, there are so many different systems of meditation. Some meditation practices are taught within a particular tradition, and even within such a tradition (eg the Buddhist tradition, the Yogic tradition) there can be many different practices. Other meditation practices are more general (eg meditation on a candle or a picture or a mandala or a mantra). Some meditations focus on the chakras, some meditations are even more subtle. Some meditations are "with seed" (ie they focus on a particular object of meditation) while others are "without seed" (they perhaps focus on simple awareness). Some meditations use the mind, others aim to still the mind and transcend thought. And so on.

All these different practices may have benefits, but I do not see how any kind of online certification qualifies anyone as an expert. So I suggest that you save your money.

You obviously do some particular practice of your own. If you have found it helpful and you want to teach others, then why not just teach that, based on your own experience and the challenges you have faced in your daily practice. Others will benefit as you have, but whatever you teach may be for them just a stepping stone to other practices. And it could be that one day you will decide to explore different meditation practices.

For me, the important thing with teaching is to teach from what you know, not just from what you have been told. When we begin, we have little knowledge and we have to take much on faith, but with practice we do gain knowledge, even if that knowledge is just the realisation of how little we know.

So once again I say, save your money and just teach from your own experience.

Peace.

Totally agree with what iamthat said above. Save your money. Why not start a friendly meditation group. Where u and others interested can meditate together and just enjoy it. I learned to meditate 25 years ago and have shown many others how to do it for free. Showing others how to do it and answering what questions I could, helped me understand my own practice more.

You're welcome.

Incidentally, I've just begun reading a book called Secrets of Meditation by someone called Davidji. I don't know how much you know about systems of meditation outside your own practice but this book seems a reasonably comprehensive and useful guide to some of the various meditation practices, while also including some of his own experiences on his journey.

I mention this because if you do start teaching then people may have various questions about other practices. Life is too short for us to become experts in all possible practices, but it could be useful if you have a theoretical understanding of what is out there. I sometimes think that people who know only their own practice or tradition have a limited or unbalanced understanding. A broader perspective helps us to understand the whole picture.

Peace.
