His political view was not that of my own, but he cared, he was a great humanitarian and - his greatest attribute in my opinion - he stood up for what he believed in and stood by what he believed in, even though he often stood alone.

Don't agree with you there. He always struck me as a dilettante, an academic socialist. Not one I could ever vote for [bit like Blair in that respect - I never voted for him either]

Each to their own.
I loved his passion and his championing the rights of the poor, but I know that most people didn't share his views.
Whether one agrees with his ideas or not, there is no denying that he was an iconic figure for the left - much as Thatcher was an icon for the right.
