About mantras, I was never really into it ever, as a practice, preferring silence & stillness plus gradual weeding out of negativity in thought, word & deed, on a moment to moment basis. Yet strangely, the manta ॐ (ohm) came to me automatically, becoming an ever present background sound current.

In my view, mantra being vibrational power in potentiality acquires potency only if combined with pure intent. Perhaps it is better to allow the mantra to come to us, rather than picking it up here & there.

A powerful mantra for those who have faith in Shiva is ॐ शिव-शक्ति नमः (ohm shiv shakti namah) with the intent that we approach the Ardhnarishwar form of Shiva & Parvati as a child, seeking divine union within our heart.

Of course the Gayatri mantra is both popular as well as powerful, if combined with the correct orientation.
