"Signs" that show up constantly and then are gone?

I seem to have periods of signs that seemingly mean nothing. For example, a few months ago, it was California popping up everywhere. Then after about a week or so, it stopped and really hasn't shown up since. Then it was the word "magpie". Now, since about a week before Hurricane Sandy even developed into a tropical depression (so it's not caused by being focused on that), I started seeing New Jersey everywhere. The only tie to that I have is that 2 bands that I really like are from there. Now that's popping up everywhere. But why? It seems like these signs totally disappear after a short time and nothing ever happens from them. ANyone have any theories on what these mean? Or are they just distractions to make us think the universe/god/whomever is actually doing stuff? Lately I feel like they're not doing anything that I can see...
