1. Relax your body.
2. Blank your thoughts
3. Play with your proprioception (that's a physical sense, that gives you an idea of where you are physically in relation to other physical things. This doesn't need visualizations, to be played with.)
3. Give up, because 1 & 2 aren't relaxed enough and, ironically, it doesn't happen for me until I trick myself into giving up on it. Giving up is the ultimate relaxation.
4. Try to stay relaxed while the violent "exit symptoms" arise, which you should be able to get automatically, around twenty minutes to an hour into step 4, if you've balanced all the above steps correctly.
5. Profit.

What all can you do when you Astral Project?

I
can't float up to the top of my bookshelf to see the playing cards that I laid out there without looking, to try to prove to myself that this isn't just in my head.
At least, I can't do that
yet. Maybe someone else can-- maybe, even, tens of people already have and I just hadn't heard of it. I read that one person already tried, and the card that he looked at seemed to be the seven of clubs and spades at the same time. (When he went back in-body and checked, it was clubs. "Close enough" doesn't count.)
I
can... sort of walk through time, and accidentally regress into a past life, and get super-empathic with other people, and travel vast distances in a short time. Um, met some mermaids? And then went some weirder places than boring old physical realm without a body... but I might have been so relaxed that I fell asleep in the middle of an out of body experience and started dreaming. (I think I
can do that, too. Don't have a brain scan machine to be sure, though.)
