Ten Commandments.

1.Abstinence from destroying life.

2. Abstinence from taking what is not given.

3. Abstinence from unchastity.

4. Abstinence from falsehood.

5. Abstinence from spirituous liquors, strong drink, intoxicants, which are a cause of negligence.

6. Abstinence from eating at the wrong time.


7. Abstinence from looking at dancing, singing, music, and plays.



8. Abstinence from wearing garlands, scents, unguents, ornaments, and adornments, which are a cause of negligence.

9. Abstinence from a high or large bed.

10. Abstinence from accepting gold and silver.


Does anyone know where these teachings came from please ?
Seems that the first five are for laymen and the last five are applicable just for Monks..

Hi Folks...

Well first glance these ten look much more manageable than those other "ten" from that bogus religion and its bogus god..lol.... but - I immediately find questions arise here..

I mean the first 5 are straight forward enough...obvious...No6 I would guess is an energetic phenomena to do with keeping a regular cycle which is rather essential...

no 7 though - I find perplexing - dancing singing and music to my direct experience are surely the vey language of the Soul - our natural expression - and "looking at plays" - well, as we see, it is the human condition to SHARE our experiences isn't it..?.. So I cant understand why it is forbidden there to essentially "share" the play as it is intended...

No8 seems very hypocritical to me - Im thinking specifically of tattoos - specifically of the Sak Yan tradition where the physical body IS ACTUALLY "adorned" in a most permanent manner... Yet this rule clearly states no such adornment at all... If we cant even add a fragrance to our body then for sure a permanent inked symbol should be a complete no no - yet just the opposite occurs - the tattoo is used as a permanant blessing - a permanant body symbol - and that would seem t go directly against this commandment above..

Likewise no 9 seems very confusing...I cant even think of a legitimate reason WHY the height of a bed should matter - any ideas Folks..??..

These things could become attachments and aversions in our mind, also they might distract our mind from seeing things as they truly are.

Not all Buddhist Schools would adhere to the last five though.

Yea the first 5 are for lay people - but monks have more.

Maybe cuz it's a bunch of silly rules, but monks have quite austere lives, and that's how they like it.

Yes your right but different Schools seem to have different rules regarding the number of them

I am still wondering though where the 10 Commandments came from. I see they are the first 10 precepts but who decided to name them as commandments.

I'm pretty sure, but not certain, according to the Buddhist teachings, Gotama made these rules for his monks. Maybe someone will look it up.

PS, it would be in the 'subtext' of the 8 path somewhere, I reckon.
