You got the tropical bit right Tzu ... it is actually the flower of the Banana tree! It took me a while to find it ... I just knew i had seen it before :)

It's a ceramic mushroom.
There are actually two of them, that one and a little red one right next to it that's covered by the flowers right now. We bought them from a local artist in Mendocino a couple years ago. I'll try to get a better shot of them tonight, weather permitting.

It was a family affair. I plumbed it and maintain it, my wife planned it and plants it, and my son dug it.
It occupies a corner of the yard with a large easement, so nothing can be built there. No mortar is used in the back supporting wall, it is just stacked keystone bricks. It uses a thick plastic lining rather than concrete as well. Being the end of winter it is actually rather neglected right now, I need to clean it out and straighten it up.
It is nice to look at and listen to.
