New Russian Satallite

Has anyone else read up on the new satellite that Russia will be launching at the end of the year?

It has giant reflective sides on it to illuminate different areas of Earth at different times.

They have stated that this satellite has no purpose but to inspire the Russian people - because this satellite will be the brightest item in the night sky after it's launch.

HAVE THEY LOST THEIR MINDS?

Hello Moon_Glow,

I've heard about this satellite being launched this year (2016) in summer. The Russians have created a triangular shape satellite to reflect sunlight - creating a shiny object for Russians to view and draw inspiration (engineering). This artificial star is said to be brighter than the moon.

I don't agree with this satellite, as it serves no purpose and I can say that this satellite will only create problems for people that wish to view the real stars and not some artificial one.

Here's the link: Russian crowdfunded reflector satellite aims to be “brightest star in the sky”

Hi Lepus - the idea of this satellite makes me very uneasy - why is it ok for one country to take the fate of the world into their hands?

Why does Russia get to decide what the brightest object in the sky is?

This goes against nature in so many ways. As do all satellites - but without them I wouldn't be talking to you right now so... I guess with no particular purpose Russia seems to be just trying to prove something to the world?

Hmm interesting. Sort of seems purposeless however, if I was reading correctly, it's just a temporary project, they didn't really spend too much on it. they Their goal is to make science fun and interesting for the youth ( you can track it online and so forth). Plus, they wanted to make a point that funding doesn't always have to come from taxes or the elite. The project was funded on public donations and popular demand, which is good point. Usually governments spend millions on projects the public have no say in.

At the heart of it all you gotta give it to engineers, I can appreciate innovation because exploration leads to further discoveries. However, yeah seems purposeless at first glance. A big shiny sattlelight

I agree with the 2 points you highlighted. What I have an issue with is the fact that they will be lighting up parts of Earth with this mirror!

Extending daylight for farmers and achieve an ability to "turn the lights on" when disasters strike.

Going against nature in this way is VERY dangerous, it scares me and I do not want to live in a world where something as permanent and reasonable as day and night is manipulated.

Like Clover said, this is a fundraiser that people get to have a say in, as oppose to those that pay their taxes going to projects that people don't have an opinion on (say in). Also, it is only temporary, but I wonder for how long?

The only thing that brought to my attention regarding this bright star is - how will this affect animals that depend on stars or the moon for migrating? I only know, new born turtles rely on the moon for crossing back into the oceans. But, not sure about stars being used for migrating purposes. I know people follow the North star, but not sure about animals that do. Nevertheless, this satellite will not cause any manipulation of night and day. I've heard conspiracy theories regarding of weather manipulation, but again merely speculations.

I'm sure the Russians mean no harm, regarding this project. But, I know it is pointless and will have people upset. My question still remains regarding animal migrations relying on stars and moon.

This was a concern for myself as well - I grew up near beaches where loggerhead sea turtles lay their eggs - the hotels on the beach aren't even allowed to have lights on the beach because the hatchlings will follow the light - they follow the moon to return to the sea. It is a big problem where I am from.

Sentiments are and concerns are understandable. I am a science gal' at heart so these types of innovations intrigue me.I tried doing more research on it, and there is little information on it. Considering costs, It striked more of a amateur project created by students. Well see, should be interesting to see if they will be allowed to follow through or if there will be complaints from the science community.
