Why can some spirits come through but not others?

I'm sorry for sounding like a broken record... I keep looking for answers around the death of my dog Barney. He died over a year ago and I had a warning dream about his death.

Right after he died, I paid for a psychic/medium reading and it was not very good. I thought maybe my grief was too strong and there was some kind of block. Sometime later I had a dream about my dog and we were running backwards in front of my Grandma's old house. I kept slapping my thighs for my dog to jump up to me and he kept showing me his legs that had cuts like he was injured and even though he wanted to jump up, he couldn't.

That has been the only dream I've had of him. It has been over a year now and a coworker recommended a psychic medium to me. She was excellent. She brought up my best friend's brother and provided information she could never have guessed. She also brought up one of my grandmothers. She finished the reading and asked if I had any questions. I broke down and asked about my dog.

She was able to connect to his energy and correctly noted his breed and personality. She said that he was not really coming through like most pets do, when they connect, but she could feel unconditional love and like we had a very special bond. She said that she sensed that he sometimes sleeps with me, by my feet on my bed, at night. I said I've never felt that.

I know this psychic is talented, she gave such exact details about other things. I'm grateful that she is honest and tells me that she can't connect to my dog. But I'm wondering why? Why can't my dog connect with me? Also, why does my one grandmother always connect with me but I have never heard/experienced anything from my other grandmother?

What makes some spirits able to connect vs. others?

I feel my dog mostly in bed.
He seems to be finding his way beside me and then he sleeps.

He moves around a lot. He makes his presence known. LOL!

Once he is in bed and 'walks around' a few times, he settles in and is quiet for the rest of the night.

Everybody is different and sometimes, the methods 'used' might not be what we would recognize as 'first contact' so we might not even recognize it.

I was brought up on a dairy farm.

None of the cows, horses, pigs, chickens, rabbits, etc. ever showed up.

The only 'animals' that had a way of showing up was snakes. As a kid I was 'deadly' afraid of them. Later on, got to enjoy their presence.

Oh that's interesting. How did snakes show up out of curiosity? I had a spider once come to me in a dream. I posted about it on the forum somewhere quite a few years ago.

When I was about 8 years old, I tried sleeping under a shade tree. After many attempts to fall asleep, I decided to get up only to find a big, black snake coiled up on my lap..... sleeping.
For decades, I was afraid of them. As a child, I had terrible nightmares. One place I lived at, I told them they had to leave and those that didn't, I kicked them off the property. We had over 11 acres.
Then I told all the animals to not mess with my gardens. One day, I noticed somebody had been eating only one half of a strawberry and leaving the rest. As I was picking berries one day, I looked up the row and there standing was the culprit..... it was a snake.
Next, I started seeing snakes in trees, swimming in the water, running across fields. My fear of them diminish.
Later, all I had to do was think of snakes and they would all of a sudden show up.

To me, they are one of my teachers.
