Hip Hop

Thought id start a thread on hip hop, for anyone interested. Who are your favourite DJ's, mc's groups, whathaveyou.

Personally speaking, back in highschool, i was into the grunge and got flack from guys on my basketball team because i was a snob towards any form of rap, i was the one rocker dude on the team lol, Then i heard a Wu-tang album one day (early material) during a road trip with some friends in the car on the way to a music festival, and was forced to listen to an entire album. Something clicked, and i understood it. It took me by surprise, but since that day i fell in love with hip hop, and constantly looking for more good artists (which can be hard to find, admittedly) Even tried my hand at being an MC for awhile (but who hasn't of course..)

Anyways, have a link of one of the most insane breakers i have ever seen, think i saw him originally on a break dance championship video of some sort, the world whatever's of breakdancing, either that or he reminds me of a french breaker with a similar style from the video who blew my mind when i first saw him. This is basically highlights of a battle im not sure where from exactly.. http://video.google.com
/videoplay?docid=4465750408899234594#

Not sure how many people here at SF are into hip hop, but figure since the subject doesn't seem welcome in the 'Metal and dark music' thread (jk) thought id just go right on ahead and start a thread here devoted to hip hop. this may end up being the only post as it slowly sinks down the music sub-forum out of page one and into the eventual dusty archives lol but hey i gave it a shot at least.

peace! ~

Hi Deusdrum,
I like hip hop - but I also like other types of music - depending on my mood.
Almost every morning, I play something that gets me moving - to exercise or to dance to.

I'm not sure - do you know what's the difference between hip hop, rap & techno? I like some techno & rap - but usually the remixes - otherwise it's to repetative.

Let's see... (This is going to date me a little, but oh, well )
Rob Base has a couple of good ones:
Joy & Pain: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w8OkNmrfVkw&feature=related
It Takes Two: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5IBRbzf3Fws

Everybody's free to feel good: Rosalla
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WI42hQHfbi8

Which songs/artists do you like, Deusdrum?

Perspective - yeah, i know the difference between them.

Some recommendations i could give you.

Talib Qweli - 'Beautiful Struggle' album.

K-Os- pretty much any of him, 'Joyful Rebellion' is the most popular one, he is a Canadian artist who has great vibe, he is well rounded musician. He sings as much as he raps, there is guitar, good rootsy feel to a lot of his stuff.

Tribe Called Quest, their earlier work. De la Soul, their earlier stuff also. Pharcyde - 'Labcabincalifornia' or 'Bizzare Ride'

Blackalicious, Blazing Arrow is really good album, many prefer the earlier one though.

Living Legends, Grouch, The Roots (they are amazingly the band on Jimmy Fallon) but there albums 'Do you want more' and 'Phrenology' are the best ones IMO.

The Mos Def album 'Black on Both Sides' is i would consider a classic.

Early Rakim and Eric B. Jurassic 5 - 'Quality Control' and 'Power in Numbers' albums are good, and the one before that, i forget what it is called.

Hieroglyphics are really good also. Lifesavas -'Spirit in Stone' album.

For instrumental, DJ Shadow's 'Endtroducing' and 'Private Press', RJD2 - 'Deadringer' and also Wax Tailor has some good albums. Nightmares on Wax i really like.

http:///www.youtube.com/watch?v=nv44r3q6zgo - Wax Tailor

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FCHG7mxIL0 - Talib

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERQzl4xDpXk Tribe Called Quest

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FdrossKXGb4&feature=related Blackalicious (lyrical skill insanity)

Some tracks that come to mind. I have a terrible memory, i'll come back at some point when, as im sure will happen, something obvious will come to me.

Honestly, im not that impressed with much that is coming out these days, at least that i have heard, there are some of course, maybe it's just being drowned out over all the garbage they play on the airwaves now.

Anyways. Place to start Perspective. Hope you find anything you like.

P.E.A.C.E. ~

Hi Deusdrum,
Thanks for those suggestions.
Just listened... Some of them reminded me of cruising the boulevards jamming to rap through big huge wolfers (speakers).

I especially liked "Around my Way" by Talib Kweli.
I like the mix in the background & a lot of meaning & feeling in the lyrics, like....
Quote:
These conditions make us strong
And we create our own businesses so later on
Our children have things in their name that they can say they own

I'll check out the others too... maybe exercise to some. :)

Rap broke off from disco music in the late seventies and Fat Back produced this song in '79 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ig3313DhcB8&feature=related . It was first made popular as a section of a song, like in Blondies 'Rapture'... ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHCdS7O248g ) and I think the idea came from from Dylan songs like 'Subterranean Homesick Blues' or country music where the singer would speak a little recital.

So as a historical account of rappings evolution I'll start with that Dylan song, which brings it right back to 1965.

Wow, he's fast! But I took the challenge...
Quote:
We're here to
Bring the people and the music and the
movement all together now

We see through
Repetitive etiquette and the highly unoriginal

We're here to
Bring the people and the music and the
movement all together now

They will lose
Check it out now

This is a necessary change from
the grim simple and plain
Gotta exercise that brain to break the
chain pain is a part of gain
No need to explain
We innovate to generate an
intricately interwoven tapestry
Of musical and ethical epiphanies
The interest is minimal
I'm on my own mission to mess with an angel
to take it all the way to where the sun is
Just like a runner loving running
Around to turn it into a simple symphony
Simple sentiment adrenaline is coming back
I made it my own city, why's it gotta be a superstar
I'd rather be a galaxy
But how you see is so dependent on
the medicine the rhetoric
And how at any second you think you
could sit on the brink of this
World is all asleep and I have no apologies
I breathe

Keep my rhymes on what we ride on
Let bygones be bygones
The migraines don't sidetrack
My final destination nothing rivals predetermination
To exterminate the germination
Of a nation that accepts anything
that's thrown in their fat face
Cause when there's nothing left
There's no more point to the rat race
We don't waste a minute of the day
Hope you can figure what I'm saying
Trying to send it all way to another stage
A creative alternator rated and greater
The crazy maniabilities take it
all up in your face wait
Success ain't only based on self esteem
It takes a sense to differentiate between
What's yours and someone else's dreams
I felt the screams climbing up my cold spine
Saying now's the time to put in all the energy
To get rid of the enemy.. I said its so..

We're here to
Bring the people and the music and the
movement all together now

We see through
Repetitive etiquette and the highly unoriginal

We're here to
Bring the people and the music and the
movement all together now

They will lose

Sick of the same old thing

Free us and touch what we can't see
Twist that knife and watch him bleed
Lost inside its way too deep
Someone choke me
Help me breathe

Run from mistakes
Right in my face
Feels like I'm running in place
There, you are, my friend. You didn't say how to catch these lyrics, right? What's my prize?

Gem,
Those are cool songs & I didn't realize the history of it, but it makes sense. Even my kids were jamming with me to the 1st song.

I thought of a couple more songs...
I really like this one - inspiring - for kids too... "I can", Nas
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUqLGRMrFAg

Also, "Rhythm of the Night" - Corona
