How to deal with lost items?

Once in a while, I come across a situation where I lose something, a small item like a watch, headphone or a pair of socks, etc, and I am unable to find it for a whole day. I can go and buy it from the market but the problem is that once I buy it, the lost item is also recovered. So my dilemma is that should I wait for the lost item to recover or buy a new one. There is also the possibility that the lost item may remain lost forever.

That's called "Sod's Law" and is as spiritual and magic as LoA. [/sarc]!! The guaranteed way to find your item is to go out and buy a replacement. Well, at least you have a stand-by one in case you lose the other again!

I agree. As long as you don't buy a new one, the old one will remain lost. The only alternative is asking yourself if you really need it. Once you notice that you can do without, it may also reappear.

At minimum this is some kind of pseudo-axiom of Murphy’s / Sod’s / Finagle’s:

You will find your lost item ONLY WHEN you buy a replacement.

Trying to second-guess, out-think or otherwise pull a fast one on this controlling mechanism will at best have no effect, at worst anger it into further demonstrations of its power.

In US you can easily return almost anything, for at least 30 days, sometimes much longer (e.g. costco).

If you really have a problem with losing things, you might want to try being more careful. That works best ... :)

wiki:
Sod's law is a name for the axiom that "if something can go wrong, it will", with the further addendum, in British culture, borrowed from Finagle's law, that it will happen at "the worst possible time". This may simply be construed, again in British culture, as "hope for the best, expect the worst".[1]

The phrase is seemingly derived, at least in part, from the colloquialism an "unlucky sod"; a term for someone who has had some bad unlucky experience, and is usually used as a sympathetic reference to the person.

The term is still used in the United Kingdom, though in North America the eponymous "Murphy's law" is more popular

When I was a child I had a watch go missing in my room. Sure enough at 12 noon it would beep and I could hear it. I checked everywhere never did find it. When we moved the beeping stopped. Such a curious thin really.

Half the time I lose things, half the time things just disappear.

Either way I try not to express frustration or anger or spend to much time looking. On things that I misplace repeatedly, like my eye glasses, I have a duplicate and just go get that one. Sure enough as soon as I go get the other pair the lost one reappear.

I lose things all the time. Most of the time I do find it in time, except for sunglasses. I can never find those once there lost.

It's similar with rain and umbrellas isn't it? If you take your umbrella with you it won't rain and you're stuck with carrying the thing the whole day. But if you leave it at home it'll surely pour

There's a technique in horary astrology to find lost items. Cast a chart for the moment you ask the question "Where is my xxx?" . Then find the planet that symbolizes the item. The house it is in gives the clue where it is, aspects further describe the circumstances, condition of it etc. I haven't tried it though.
