Excellent. To this I would add, indoor and outdoor container gardening. It's very easy to get a tub to grow potatoes in or whatever you like, even on a balcony. You don't have to have a lot of room. There are also books on indoor container gardening. You can purchase grow lights for plants indoors, too. There are lots of vids and books doing this kind of lifestyle on a budget, you just have to access them. Grow your own herbs, etc. No more huge grocery bills, at all.
Along with drying foods, you can also learn to harvest seeds.

one more advise- buy a GOOD AND BIG freezer and freeze all seasonal veges for the winter time. Then just throw them in the oven, little of olive oil and ha! you have a meal done!
