La Llorna is spanish for "weeping woman", its a popular legend here in the SW ...
I've never seen or heard her ...
The story itself kept us safely away from the many irrigation ditches (acequias) in the neighbor as well as the Rio Grande River ...

Lady Llorona was blamed for hiding the body of a classmate of mine 44yrs ago ...
His bloated body was found 3 days later 10' from where rescuers had searched numerous times along the Rio Grande ...
I had been at the matanza earlier, but left prior to Steve's drowning --- (NM matanza is cooking a pig or goat underground) ...
I did go back w/many friends to help out in the search; it was baffling that he could not be found b/c the river was barely moving & the depth was less than 2' ...
Not sure any information was ever uncovered to explain why his body wasn't discovered earlier since it was found practically in full view just inches from the riverbank ...
There were reports by numerous people who said they heard LA Llorona wailing or saw an image of a female ghost all 3 nights at the exact place Steve was located ...
Maybe their fear kept them from approaching the area, in any case, the firemen & searchers said they had been combed the area over & over ...

Thank you for that! You know I had vaguely heard of her, found the story of her drowning her children interesting, but I didn't know much beyond that. The two differing stories are interesting too, I wonder what to make of that.

She is a common story among the Hispanics. I think partly a morality story. Partly a urban legand ghost story.
