There's an interesting spider on my verandah.

It makes a web much like other spiders do, but in the centre it curls op a brown leaf and sits inside it, hiding in there.

I don't think it's hiding to conceal itself from prey which might happe along, because other spiders don't do that. I think it uses the leaf to hide from it's predators (like wasps).

Ive seen something like that around my yard Gem, in my rose bush, a little one curls a rose leaf and sits inside it, but not in the centre like that......and not in as big a web, I have a huge web between the fence and a tree but no leaf in the middle only a very big spider when she appears.....she usually hides in the tree ...waiting.....

Love the shot of the web too Gem ... I have spotted lots of webs in the garden with the curled leaf ... I think you are right ... they are hiding from insect-eating creatures, mostly birds ... like Dragonfly has noticed too, the really big spiders don't seem to use a leaf though ...
Wasps are amazing creatures ... most folk probably know this but for those who don't, there is one type of wasp who go down to the river/creek bank, and gather up little balls of mud, which they carry in-between their front legs back up to somewhere safe and dry, like on the verandah wall of some humans house lol ... and with the little balls they build a series of what I call 'little sleeping bags' ... it takes them ages to complete just one ... they lay their eggs in the sleeping bag, then they go around under the eaves or where ever, gathering little spiders and other insects, which they don't actually kill but instead they inject a general anaesthetic, which puts the spider/bug into a comatose state ... they then place them in with the eggs they have laid, and then seal the end of the sleeping bag ... when the baby wasps hatch they have live food to nourish them until they are ready to make their way out into the world ... simply amazing!

Staying on topic :)

I have no new flowers to share...but a couple of visitors. The first has been visiting all winter. I've seen three separate squirrels so far. Not sure whether they are related or not. I think they're one of my favourite garden visitors. He/she is hanging upside down on a nut feeder. Using legs/tail to hold on and front legs to eat. Clever little sausage.

Sadly, a goldfinch flew into the patio window this morning and knocked itself out. I'm pleased to report it survived...but took approximately an hour to recover (the longest I've ever seen). I was sending it my lifeforce/gentle healing for most of that time and was delighted when it suddenly flew away. As I was capturing Mr. Bushy Tail, I thought I'd take a photo of Goldie as it was sitting quietly recovering.
