Noppera-bo

Has anyone ever encountered anything like the Noppera-bo (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Noppera-b%C5%8D), an entity in the form of a faceless human? I haven't encountered such a thing, but I'm a little curious about it. I'm interested in folklore, and wonder if any of these things have any authentic origins.

This story could be made up, of course, but it's interesting:

On May 19, 1959, Honolulu Advertiser reporter Bob Krauss reported a sighting of a mujina at the Waialae Drive-In Theatre in Kahala. Krauss reported that the witness watched a woman combing her hair in the women's restroom, and when the witness came close enough, the mujina turned, revealing her featureless face. The witness was reported to have been admitted to the hospital for a nervous breakdown. Noted Hawaiian historian, folklorist and author Glen Grant, in a 1981 radio interview dismissed the story as rumor, only to be called by the witness herself, who gave more details on the event, including the previously unreported detail that the mujina in question had red hair. The drive-in no longer exists, having been torn down to make room for purposes not yet divulged by the government.

I enjoyed a lot of evenings watching movies at the old Waialae drive-in Theatre while growing up in Honolulu. I had heard about the legend of the faceless ghost but thankfully, never had an encounter. I heard a very similar story. In the 1960's, a young woman who had gone to the toilets during intermission and had seen a woman combing her long black hair in front of the mirror. When she spoke to this "woman" (just to be friendly, I guess), the woman turned around and to the young visitor's horror, the front of this woman's face was as smooth as an egg. The young visitor screamed and fainted. As she was being taken to the hospital, she regained consciousness and told the people tending to her what she saw.

I heard stories about the ghost now wandering about the shopping complex across the street. She has been seen in the woman's toilets, which is situated in the lower basement level of the shopping centre. She has also been seen wandering about the grounds of the shopping centre late at night.

Incidentally, the drive-in was situated next to an old children's cemetary, which is also known to be haunted. The Theatre is long gone but the cemetary is still there.

Thanks for the correction, Desert Rat. I've never heard of a Skin Walker.

Interesting stories, Iza. Bathrooms in a basement? I'll pass! Basements can be creepy in general just because of that sense of isolation they're able to create, but if you are sitting on the toilet and catch sight of a ghost, at least you're sitting in the right place!
