When I Wore A Uniform

When I wore a uniform
I used to wonder what I’d done?”
But now I wear less clothing
And have taught myself to run.
And though stones and thorns abound
My feet have yet to callus over,
And I reminisce of dulled senses
Before I became sober.
Bitter stinging nettles never
ceased to brush against me, though,
I learned to bare and boil them
And grew quite fond of tea.
And now rigid joints have loosened,
Muscles have begun to shrink,
And I breathe a little deeper
Every time I take a drink.
The sun had never seemed too hot
My skin had never burned,
But dryer heat and blistered feet
Coerce me now to learn,
To see the signs of coming rain
And journey toward the storm,
And ask myself,
“What had I done?”
When I wore a uniform.
