Gnostics believe it was the Spirit speaking through Jesus
I am the way (Hodos, feminine, Hebrew Derek, masc sometimes feminine)
the truth (Alethia, feminine, Hebrew Emeth, fem)
the life (Zoe, feminine, Hebrew Eve, fem)
The Mother leading to the Father, or Heart to the Head

Orthodox Christians don't go in for esoteric explanations so much in passages like this!

Traditionally, that Greek phrase is translated as "I am the way"
but the Greek 'may' not actually support that view.

The word "I" comes from the Greek word Ἐγώ which seems to always be translated as I.

The word "am" comes from the Greek word "εἰμι" which can be translated as "I am" and a few other variations.

The word "the" comes from the Greek which does not ever seem to get translated as the except in this verse. Can be translated as "which" or as "which I"

The word "way" comes from the Greek word ὁδὸς which generally gets translated as "the way".

In Greek, Είμαι ο δρόμος gets translated as "I am the way".
The Greek scripture that got cited reads in Greek Ἐγώ εἰμι ἡ ὁδὸς

Also, there are some Bible translations that translate this phrase differently.

I would say this scripture needs more scrutinizing.

Jesus was the one being quoted.
