Mermaids portrayed as evil in pirates Of Carribean movie..

I'm also not too pleased with some of the Angel art I've come across on the internet aswell... so called dark (or gothic?) angels holding skulls.. etc.. It's wrong and insulting no?

I Do find it a bit offensive seeing paintings of dark angels holding skulls, and demonic mermaids. I would love to see Art and the media strike a balance-- not a sugary sweet angel or mythological being, but someone kids could look up to .

The closest thing in the media I found that sort of matches that is the characters in the "Lord of the Rings" and "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe"-- The Lion in that one really embodies the sort of character I wish artists could capture in paintings of angels, etc . Not something sugary sweet, but maybe someone embodying self sacrifice, inner strength and nobility for example. When the artist highlights an aspect of our base human lusts and makes the subject embody and glorify these lusts then , that's where I personally lose interest. Let's aim higher already.

The mermaids as portrayed in the film are as they were perceived in those days... read up on mermaid myths and legends - plenty of tales about them pulling sailors to their doom. If you have to be upset about anything in the film, be upset about how awful it was compared to the previous ones, lol.

- but yes, you are right though- in folklore, the mermaid was often depicted as someone diabolical. If these Beings DO exist, I do think that they are not all like that, but there are probably sociopath-like Beings in every realm and race, just as there are sociopath humans.

Hahahahaha STAR BUCKS symbol is a mermaid holding her "legs" wide open, so yeah that one is definitely evil, enticing you into her "water hole" lol.

As soon as I saw this thread, the thought of maybe the film writers where playing on the ancient idea of how Sirens drag Sailors to their deaths with their beautiful music, popped into my mind.
