Book1 Aphantasia?

Hello!

I've known about meditation for the last 3-5 years or so, and have actively attempted to, in particular, ground myself. I feel like grounding is something I can really benefit from, but there's an issue I've come across, and I'd like to see if anyone else may have an insight:

I have stumbled upon something called aphantasia, also known as mental blindness. A (without) phantasia (fantasy), it is a term that has been coined by a Dr. Zeman. There's some research that he's started to do as more people are starting to notice they are not able to visualize, as the majority of the population is able. Heck, I've come to understand people may not know they are /supposed/ to have this ability, that they just are without it from start to finish.

I'm not sure what it's like to count sheep, or to imagine roots growing out of my feet. Or to imagine a glowing ball of white/gold/healing light surrounding me. Or how to visualize the water from my shower head cleansing my aura/energy and washing away the negativity from my space.

When I first stumbled upon this phrase, mental blindness, there was a list of mental exercises that were listed to slowly build up the "visualization muscle". When things in my life start to settle, I plan on setting time aside to pursue and practice with this work-out plan.

In the meantime, I was wondering if anyone may have suggestions that may not utilize visualization in order to ground my energy? I have quite a few grounding stones, but I'm not quite sure how to utilize them other than by simply carrying them around with me. I was hoping to be a little more active about it.

I'd appreciate any input anyone may have. Thank you for reading, and I hope you all have a wonderful day, wherever you may be!

There are other techniques. Visualization techniques are not meant for everyone, not everyone will find them easy.

The one I practice is this one.
Just sit in a comfortable position, close your eyes, all kinds of thoughts will pass, positive, negative, let them pass, images will pass, memories, sounds, emptions, just let them pass. Watch them pass as if you're watching a movie, sitting on a comfortable couch, just let them pass without any judgement. Don't get caught up in them, don't get involved. And you will see what happens.

Another technique I practice is this one Osho's Dynamic Meditation (Google).

There are other techniques too, only some of them require visualization. Practice the one you find easy. Google "112 meditation techniques".

(Note: I'd have posted the URLs here but I'm not allowed to until my post count reaches 15, so find them in google).

Here is a very basic visualization that is great for falling asleep if you're laying down eyes closed. I think this would also be good to stretch your visualization access.

- At your feet you imagine an orange ball. You can make it peach colored, give it some sparkle or leave it plain..its your ball

- You imagine that you are passing your orange ball from one imaginary foot to the other. As you pass the ball from foot to foot, your brain wants to stretch your feet to follow and will even switch them. You just have to stay out of the way and let your feet follow the orange ball to dreamland.

Do you have trouble with 3D vision at all? I've never been able to see 3D and I had pretty much the same issue when I started stretching my visualization muscle. Was like finding something that I never knew I was missing.

Take care

GG

Hello,

After I meditate, I drink water to ground my energy. No visualization involved. As to how much water to drink varies with the meditation. If it went really well, it means I need to ground more so I drink more water but not all at once. Just a mouthful at a time until I feel less 'spacey'.

Another method to use is to hold a black crystal. It can be any kind of a crystal as long as it's black. I prefer a black smokey quartz cluster. Others prefer black obsidian. Whichever crystal you choose, hold it until you feel better. This doesn't require visualization either.

Hope this helps.

Hi Vondee,
All body awareness techniques should be good for grounding. Awareness of breath meditation, mindful walking, yoga, etc. No visualization needed.

There are a number of mudras that can help you to relax and focus. A mudra is simply a posture or position the hands are held in. like the classic thumb and index finger forming a ring, the remaining 3 fingers extended and the hands resting one on each knee.

The above works wonders for focus. Once you get relaxed and still enough to meditate. use the above mudra to sharpen your focus, it works. Another great one is touching the thumb, index and middle fingers together (lightly). Do that with each hand and just rest the hands comfortably on each knee as you sit. It will lower you into alpha quite fast. You can literally feel it work.

I find both off these useful, when I am doing self hypnosis for visualization I use the latter. I use the first one when meditating. Give them a try.
