Tomb of the Patriarchs Jewish Practices
I understand that the Tomb of the Patriarchs in Hebron began as a series of caves for burial, and then got turned into a walled area with synagogues during the reign of Herod the Great. Does anybody know the sort of activities that Jewish pilgrims would undertake when they came to this site, both before and after Herod's changes? Did they enter the actual caves? Was there a certain prayer, ceremony, taboos?
Thanks for any input.
