It's only harmful or beneficial to you if you choose to believe me or not. You've probably never met or heard of a real prophet living today so you have very little basis for comparison, now you do. I made 2 screen names when I was about 12 years old during the 56k modem days and kept them ever since, this is one of them.

One sure fire way to tell if a prophet is real or not is, if they do it for money they are fake. You can pretty much assume they are all fake, but some are partially real like.. people that can channel that call themselves prophets, they may be really psychic but to truly be a prophet means you must have had visions of divinity and God itself. You must have experience with real divine power, so rare it's almost non existent. In the bible I only consider Jesus and Elijah to be real prophets, maybe I was then I'm not sure but what I wrote in the book of James is pretty accurate.
