The Freighter "Naviero" and the USO, July 1967

If one accepts that UFO's have undersea bases, it is logical that occasionally a surface ship will come across a UFO navigating the waters. The incident reported here which occurred off the coast of southern Brazil on 30 July 1967 has been poorly understood even though it rates as the most important "sighting" in southern waters in the 20th century.

The "Naviero" began life as the Victory ship "Kodiak Victory", built at a US yard in January 1945. She was of 7,200 gross register tons, 455 feet long, 62 feet in the beam, draft 28 feet. Her 8,500-bhp steam machinery provided a top speed of 17 knots.

Being surplus to requirements in 1946 she was sold to the Argentine Dodero Line and renamed "Naviero". After several changes of hands, by 1967 she was operated by the Empresa Líneas Marítimas Argentinas (ELMA). At the time of the event in 1967 she had a crew of forty under Captain Julio Ardanza. Her cargo was military explosives. She was southbound for Buenos Aires, but where she loaded this cargo remains unknown.

At 2215 hrs Greenwich Mean Time on 30 July 1967, the "Naviero" had reached position 28º48'South 46º43'West, about 120 miles east of Santa Marta Grande. At his subsequent interview with the Press (footnote 1) Captain Ardanza stated:

"On 30 July at 2215 hrs Greenwich Mean Time I was taking a meal in my cabin with my crew less the on-duty men and lookouts when First Officer Jorge Montoya summoned me to the bridge urgently. I went up immediately and he showed me a strange form about 30 metres long in the shape of a Havanna cigar on our starboard side at the level of the forecastle.

"The night was very dark and there was much marine phosphorescence. The object was travelling submerged, had a very sharp silhouette and was luminous. It kept pace with us at our speed of 17 knots for fifteen minutes before it increased speed to 25 knots and made off below the hull of the "Naviero"."

Captain Ardanza stated that the object was rigid and not flexible, not a whale, left no wake, had no periscope or conning tower like a normal submarine, nor external control surfaces such as movable fins, horizontal or vertical rudders and no propellors. At all times it was silent.

Chief Officer Carlos Lasca (footnote 2) described it as "a submergible UFO with self-luminescence." His use of the word "submergible" suggests that at some point he had seen the object navigating on the surface: at first even Captain Ardanza had described the object as "semi-submerged". Lasca also stated that the object had "speeded up upon starting its turn to the port side, went under the hull but then re-appeared on the starboard side at the level of No.2 hold and then disappeared on bearing 145º (S35E)."

There are two facts here that provide us with the evidence that something very strange happened to the "Naviero" for at least the fifteen minutes of this incident.

Captain Ardanza stated that "the night was very dark and there was much marine phosphorescence." Indeed, marine phosphorescence would not be visible unless the night was dark. But it was not dark at all. In the southern hemisphere it was high summer, and 2215 hrs Greenwich Mean Time was four hours ahead of local time in south-eastern Brazil and Argentina. Therefore, the sun had set just before six o'clock that evening and night would not fall until after seven o'clock. The entire fifteen minutes of the "Naviero" incident occurred during a fifteen-minute period between sunset and nightfall.

There was no doubt about the time logged and the time when a report was sent immediately to the Argentine prefecture. There can have been no doubt as to the circumstances in the captain's mind. The Naviero has somehow strayed into the parallel dimension where it was fully dark and the marine phosphorescence could be seen a-glitter.

One imagines that the "Naviero" must have come as a surprise to the undersea watchers who sent a drone to inspect this ship which they knew was carrying explosives. When the drone or its crew was satisfied that there was no threat, it withdrew.

As regards a possible UFO base suspected to be found not far from the coast of Brazil see "Memoir, Descriptive and Explanatory to Accompany the New Chart, by John Purdy 1822, Pilots and Pilotage."

An island named by Dutchman John Indestz Lindeman "Saxemburg" was first discovered on 23 August 1670 in position 30º45'S 19ºW. It is said to be 4 leagues (12 miles) in length and about 2.5 miles in breadth on the NW-SE axis. It has "a remarkable peak like a column near its centre."

The island Saxemburg was next seen in 1804 from the American ship "Fanny" bound for China and kept under observation for four hours from the masthead, position 30º45'S 17ºW.

A Captain Flinders stated that in 1810 at the Cape of Good Hope, His Excellency the Earl of Caledon favoured him with the extract from the logbook of the sloop "Columbia" returning to the Cape from Brazil: "22 September 1809 5 p.m. saw island of Saxemburg bearing ESE 4.5 leagues distant: clear weather. Steered for the said island and found it to be at 30º18'S 28º20'W or thereabouts." He approached it sufficiently closely to see trees at 1.5 miles distance and a sandy beach.

Saxemburg is an inconstant island believed to be situated in the parallel dimension or other world, so to speak. It lies along the 30th meridian of latitude but the variation in longitude is due to the difficulty in measuring longitude without an accurate chronometer in those days. Several similar inconstant islands are known of in the waters of the South Atlantic. They appear in this dimension from time to time and rarely. Saxemburg has not been reported in this world since 1809.
