Thanks for that advice EndOfTheRoad. Too late, I saw my mistake. Fortunately it was only a 5-6 mile round walk to the little store and back, so I could get back quite quickly, change and warm up. But it's definitely a danger in a wilderness situation, and probably a quick way to get hypothermia!
You are right. I'll do that in future.
