I've not read all the replies but take magnesium and zinc tablets. I get the rage something awful and I'm on my own mostly with two young children since my husband works away. It's really not their fault or fair to have it directed at them. I get uptight about tidiness and cleanliness about this time too, whereas I'm normally quite relaxed about mess (cos Lego just gets everywhere) and clean only once a day.
It's worse if I haven't been to the gym. I find a 5k run and the punchbag usually sorts it.
Magnesium and zinc are really incredible at reducing the rage, and the associated anxiety of controlling it in order to not direct it at the children. I take it for two weeks and have 2weeks without it. I normally know when I need to start taking it again as I'll find myself getting angry over some stupidly small thing.

All the info about eating fresh and organic, and getting loads of fluids is good. And being sure to get Vitamins B complex and C -- key for physical symptoms. Switching to tea from coffee and not too much is very helpful too. Vitamin D also for mood, and some calcium if needed, to calm nerves. Also probiotic, to help with intestinal upsets.

For herbals, by far the most effective is a LOW DOSE chasteberry, or Vitex capsule. 80 mg/day. Not several hundred, LOL.

I also find Hawthorne (tea or capsule) very effective as an allover mind-body tonic, so that I can bring my painful emotions to the surface and release grief around my cycle, as nature intended.

Peace & blessings,
7L

Excellent tips in here! I would reiterate support for water. It has worked wonders for me to increase my water intake to one gallon a day.

I would also recommend massage, if it is feasible for you. It can help your mind and body reconnect, and help you to transition out of the sympathetic nervous system overload that usually accompanies PMS. When I was active in massage therapy, my clients often reported reduced PMS symptoms. :)

I remember I used to get swollen eyes in the morning with PMS. I used cucumber slices on my eyes while in the bath, and that helped, and cotton wool pads soaked in ice cold water or iced black coffee. But I soon worked out that it was about salt. When I cut down salt intake that helped (plus drinking plenty of water.)
That would also help with a general bloated feeling as well.
