The name is known, most will have heard it.
Someone could try to find out what his field of working was.
Or the era.
So that I don't have to just tell.

Also was this in the 1700s, because I see the watch, so self winding type watches were common at the time maybe, when it was first invented.
Sorry, I just saw this post. Probably was posted while I was responding to the one before. And then, the doorbell rang and I was called off.
Not the 1700's and not witch hunt era.
Self-winding is a huge hint. Not exactly a self-winding watch (do not stick to watch or clock or self-winding), but something... This definitely is going into the right direction.

Thanks a lot for playing.
Edited my post a bit to avoid sending people in a wrong direction.
Bolded the words "first" and "invented".
Added that best not to stick to "watch" or "self-winding" too much.

No worries Seeker.. I’m sure this crew will get it eventually!

In my attempt to discern his century I drew a mish mash of cards which may put him in the Victorian era, as an inventor/scientist.

The Star, The Dark Magician (again, ugh!) and 3 of Swords with Queen of Wands to clarify. The shadow card was King of Swords. Last pull was 10 of Wands.

So perhaps he was from the 19th century? And engineered a new technology, not unlike Nikola Tesla (?)

Not 19th century. Not Tesla. Earlier.
Inventor, scientist, engineered and new technologies all fit.
The direction is right. Getting there.

No, earlier.
But, as I now can say, like Nobel he invented something destructive.
Which might be that "dark side" you have seen. Which was only a small part of what he did, though.
