Suffering is only seen as an option by those who are not suffering.. 
Pain has no borders and welcomes all to the feast.

You have to discuss it further with Dalai.
Here is my interpretation of his words of wisdom.
Pain is inevitable which means that all of us encounter/experience pain in our lives.
I agree with Mr. Lama. We all experience pain in our lives.
Do you know anyone who has not?
Suffering is optional which means that we have a choice on how to react to those inevitable pain.
I understand reacting with sadness, anger, fear, and etc. But these are honest human expressions and emotions.
But suffering is a self determined act.
